Famous Portuguese Artist VHILS Presents His Work in Paris<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 The Paris Design Week and the Maison et Objet Event<\/a> are just around the corner, and we can\u2019t wait to see PullCast<\/a>\u00a0at both of them. But these events will only take place in September, so if you are visiting Paris in August we recommend\u00a0you take a look at the several exhibitions of the famous Portuguese Street Artist VHILS<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0that are scattered throughout the city.<\/p>\n

Even though street art<\/strong>\u00a0is normally connected with graffiti, a method of superimposition whereby the\u00a0artist<\/strong>\u00a0sprinkles or paints over some kind of openly viewed surface, so it\u2019s no wonder that Portuguese\u00a0urban artist\u00a0<\/strong>Alexandre Farto, who goes by the moniker\u00a0VHILS<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, has accomplished worldwide acclaim for his groundbreaking bas-relief\u00a0carving technique<\/strong>\u00a0that essentially does the opposite:\u00a0instead of joining extra layers on top of existing ones, he decreases from what is previously there. His meteoric rise since the early 2000s, which has seen his work showcased through many single and group shows around the world, has directly consummated with not one but two solo shows operating concurrently is Paris.<\/p>\n

Created in collaboration with\u00a0Magda Danysz Gallery<\/a>, \u201cFragments Urbains\u201d at\u00a0Centquatre\u00a0is an energetic, kaleidoscopic\u00a0art exhibition<\/strong>\u00a0of the artist\u2019s oeuvre showcasing some of his trademark forms of work as well as a variety of works in new tools that reflect on globalization and the creation of modern urban civilizations.\u00a0VHILS<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0likes to explore with new mediums and methods shown by the wide range of works on display, from\u00a0carved wooden doors,\u00a0<\/strong>Styrofoam sculptures and\u00a0engraved metal<\/strong>, to layers of carved posters, acid painting and videos.<\/p>\n

Applying\u00a0chisels\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0jackhammers<\/strong>\u00a0in the beginning and later going on to acid, bleach, breezy tools, and even explosives,\u00a0VHILS<\/strong><\/em>\u2019 carved\u00a0portraits<\/strong>\u00a0of unknown characters uncannily resemble both ephemeral and timeless.<\/p>\n
