Expect to see a truly outrageous and over-the-top red carpet this year. The theme of the Met\u2019s 2019 Costume Exhibition is \u201cCamp: Notes on Fashion<\/em>.\u201d No, not camp as in sleeping bags and tents, but camp as in\u00a0exaggerated fashion<\/strong>. The exhibit is inspired by Susan Sontag\u2019s 1964 essay that defines camp as \u201clove of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Event<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fittingly, the\u00a0Met Gala<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will be co-hosted by two campy fashion aficionados:\u00a0Lady Gaga<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Harry Styles<\/strong>. Even more fitting, the entire 2019 event is being sponsored by\u00a0Gucci<\/strong>. Gucci\u2019s\u00a0Alessandro Michele<\/strong>\u00a0along with tennis icon\u00a0Serena Williams<\/strong>\u00a0will also be joining the two pop stars as co-chairs of the 2019 gala.<\/p>\n

Featuring both men\u2019s and womenswear, the Met\u2019s \u201cCamp: Notes on Fashion<\/em>\u201d exhibition will feature over 200 pieces of\u00a0fashion<\/strong>, along with\u00a0sculptures<\/strong>,\u00a0paintings<\/strong>, and\u00a0drawings<\/strong>\u00a0from the 17th century through today. The works of designers from Virgil Abloh to\u00a0Alexander McQueen<\/strong>,\u00a0John Galliano<\/strong>, Rei Kawakubo, Mugler,\u00a0Bob Mackie<\/strong>,\u00a0Karl Lagerfeld<\/strong>, and more will be featured in the exhibit. Fresh off the\u00a0Couture Week runways<\/strong>, the Viktor & Rolf slogan couture gowns that sparked an endless stream of memes will also be on display.\u00a0A large part of the exhibition will explore how irony, humour, parody, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion. Other sections will highlight Versailles along with queer subcultures of Europe and America dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.<\/p>\n
