The Amazing Rooftop Bar Design Project of BHDM Designed in New York \u2013<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Famous design studio BHDM transformed the interior of one old bar, at the top of AC Hotel, located in New York City\u2019s Time Square, into a stunning place by using warm materials and Spanish-influenced motifs.<\/p>\n

The new building is positioned directly opposite\u00a0Renzo Piano\u2019s New York Times tower, and among\u00a0Midtown\u2019s dense cluster of skyscrapers, providing dramatic views from its lofty windows.\u00a0BHDM Design<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0founder Dan Mazzarini was responsible for the bar\u2019s interiors, which he envisioned as \u201ca warm and sexy\u00a0rooftop living room lounge<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>with strong geometric influences, inspired by the vaults and shapes of Spanish architecture\u201d.<\/p>\n

As a result, an 11-foot-tall (3.4-metre) arch is used as a repeated motif throughout the space, acting as doorways, mirrors, and a backdrop for the bar counter. \u201cThrough a series of rooms and geometric vignettes, BHDM designed Castell to be the premier\u00a0Midtown rooftop destination<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d said a project description from the studio.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>After exiting the elevators, visitors arrive in a cozy space styled like a living room. Walls lined in warm-toned walnut and plenty of soft furnishings create an\u00a0intimate atmosphere<\/strong><\/em>, aided by a large fireplace that offers a view through to the bar area next door. This adjacent, larger space is lighter and brighter, thanks to windows on both sides. Bar stools run along the south-facing stretch, where guests can enjoy drinks while gazing up at the\u00a0Empire State Building<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0In the center of the room, a built-in bench made from black and white speckled terrazzo is topped with tan leather cushioning, and accompanied by small tables for casual dining. More seating is provided in the form of\u00a0velvet-upholstered sofas<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>around the fireplace, which measures nine feet (2.7 meters) across.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

The service counter at the rear is faced in huge slabs of\u00a0French marble<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and topped with a black fixture. The artwork on the walls was specially commissioned for the project. At night, the rooms are transformed with moody cove lighting, highlighting the staggered ceiling, and spotlights that pick up the tones of the walnut walls.\u00a0\u201cInto the evening, the glittering city outside takes center stage while lighting throughout dims to a warm glow,\u201d said BHDM. The studio also designed Castell\u2019s open-air terrace, accessible through the floor-to-ceiling glass panels that form the bar\u2019s north wall and open entirely when the weather is warm.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>The\u00a0expansive balcony<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0features copious planting, which is illuminated at night, between several low cushioned seating booths. Timber decking covers the floor, while more arch mirrors echo the\u00a0interior design<\/strong><\/em>. \u201cBHDM\u2019s aim was to create an outdoor room with the residential sensibility that capitalized on the sizzle and sparkle of the city as the backdrop,\u201d said the studio.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>For other impressive vistas of the New York skyline, recently completed options include the Woods Bagot-designed\u00a0Manhattan\u00a0restaurant atop a modernist skyscraper in the Financial District and the rooftop bar at\u00a0The Hoxton\u00a0hotel in Williamsburg. Based in the city, BHDM is best known for its\u00a0hospitality projects<\/strong><\/em>. The studio recently completed\u00a0\u201cthe most\u00a0instagrammable<\/em>\u00a0hotel in Hawaii\u201d\u00a0and previously worked on the interiors for\u00a0boutique lodgings in Miami Beach.<\/p>\n
